KEFALONIA (CEPHALONIA) - THE GREEK ISLAND THAT IS THE PERFECT MATCH FOR ZAKYNTHOS

KEFALONIA - GREEK LANDSCAPES THAT LOOK LIKE A DREAM

  KEFALONIA LANDSCAPES

Kefalonia is the fourth stop on the itinerary of this trip.

Lake Melissani
MELISSANI LAKE

The first stop of the itinerary was Capri (post here). This post of Capri also contains the whole planning of the trip. If you haven't read it yet, I do recommend you take a look to better understand the trip sequence. But, if your interest is only about Kefalonia, you are in the right place 😁 😁

ASOS

The second stop was the Amalfi Coast (post here)

MYRTOS BEACH

The third was Zakynthos (or Zante) (post here)

ASOS

Kefalonia is an island that lies to the north of Zakynthos, 1h:30 by boat (ferry).

MYRTOS

The island became famous for being the location of the good film "Captain Corelli's Mandolin " (movie link), featuring Nicholas Cage, Penelope Cruz and Cristian Bale, in young age and beginning their successful careers.

ANTISSAMOS

The film is very romantic and shows the beautiful landscapes of Kefalonia, without mentioning its name.

MYRTOS BEACH

On one hand, this was good because prevented the fame of the film to transform the island in a crowded touristic spot, however, on the other hand, delayed the world knowing its natural beauties.

SAMI HARBOUR

Honestly, I added the island on the trip itinerary as a complement to the "main course" which was Zakynthos.

SCENERY ROUTES EVERYWHERE

Fortunately, it was a wonderful surprise to find out that Kefalonia was far from being a mere "trip complement". What do you think?

ANTISSAMOS - AMAZING!!!!

The island offers fantastic attractions. You can hike, visit pleasant villages, mountains, lakes, landscapes, eat in good restaurants (delicious greek food) and, of course, enjoy amazing beaches. Don't forget: you are in GREECE!!!

ARRIVING IN ANTISSAMOS - UNBELIEVABLE BEACH

Take a look at the pictures and conclude by yourselves if it's worth or not to add it in your next trip.

CRYSTAL WATERS

HOW TO GET THERE

As in Zakynthos, there are some direct flights coming from Athens and some ferries coming from the mainland (por of Killini).

AGIOS NIKOLAOS PORT (ZAKYNTHOS)

But, in my case, since I was in Zakynthos (Zante), the natural way was to take the ferry in Agios Nikolaos port, in the northeastern of Zante, and arrive in Pesada port, in the south of Kefalonia.

It is a 1h:30 ride. Cost: 9 euros (june, 2016)

KEBAB, ANYONE?

Keep in mind that this route by boat (Zante to Kefalonia) is possible only during medium/high season (end of May to end of September).

GOATS "PLANTATION"

GOATS "PLANTATION" - FUNNY LANDSCAPE.

Information about the ferry: http://ionionpelagos.com/en/content/112
In low season, you can go from one island to the other, only by plane or going through the mainland (Killini).

ANTISSAMOS - PANORAMIC VIEW

WHERE TO STAY

Being an island, my tip is that u choose a place close to your place of arrival or departure.
Thus, as the island is not small, u will spend less time in your arrival (or departure) day.

OUR HOTEL IN KEFALONIA - PEACEFUL AND BEAUTIFUL

Thus, in my case, since I arrived in Pesada and would depart to Athens by plane, I preferred to stay in the southern part of the island, even knowing that the northern part (Fiskardo and Asos) also offered great options.

ALOE STUDIOS - MY HOTEL IN KEFALONIA

After searching the usual sites booking.com and trip advisor, I chose a studios/apart-hotel, called Aloe Studios. Great value.

VIEW FROM OUR BALCONY

Although it was quite isolated, the studio's atmosphere was amazing. Peaceful, with a perfect private beach and a nice restaurant close by.

OUR OWN PRIVATE BEACH
Perfect for couples and families with children!! I do recommend (and I am not making any money with this....) 👌

LIVING THE DREAM

GETTING AROUND

ASOS VILLAGE

Car!! Car! Car!!
No doubts on this topic. U will definitely need a car.

The island is huge and if u want to visit the main attractions, car is a must have.
By the way, be ready to drive a lot. In one day, I happily drove more than 150km....!! 💪 💪 😀 😀 😀

FORGET DIETS...IMPOSSIBLE TO RESIST 👀    👀

To cross the island, east to west or south to north, u will certainly have to go through several mountain routes.

MY ROUTE

Therefore, don't forget your GPS, but also buy a region map in any gas station or supermarket.

LANDSCAPES IN KEFALONIA

The map is very important, because, it is not rare that the GPS will try to seek the shortest or fastest route and take you to some inactive roads or shortcuts that the map with certainly not endorse.

KEFALONIA ROADS

Sites to help u rent a car.

The cool thing it that u can negotiate with the rental agency to pick your car anywhere and return it anywhere. In my case, I pick it at Pesada port and return it at the airport. Simple and fast, "greek style".... 🔝🔝🔝🔝

MIRAGE?

You can find my sightseeing preferences below.

Melissani lake/cave - Simply fantastic.

MELISSANI LAKE RIDE

In the middle of nowhere, a hole in the earth that looks like a mexican "cenote" allows unforgettable views of a crystal clear lake and a mysterious cave.

UNBELIEVABLE CLEAR WATERS

Unfortunately, u cannot swim in the lake.
The ride costs: 7 euros/person.

MELISSANI LAKE

MYSTERIOUS CAVE

SAMI - one of the main cities of the island. Charming and beautiful. It has a port that is the preferred entrance for the tourists who come from the mainland by boat.

SAMI PORT

ANTISSAMOS BEACH - a must see. One of the most beautiful beaches of the world. Crystal ad peaceful waters. AMAZING!!!! You must add it in your bucket list.

DIFFERENT SHADES OF BLUE AND GREEN

The blue-green contrast created by the combination of the sunlight and the small white pebbles on the seabed is simply UNFORGETTABLE!!!

This is the famous beach thats appears so often in the Captain Corelli film.

OUTSTANDING!!! WOW!

This beach is a wonderful place to spend a day, relaxing in the sun and rejuvenating with divings in these perfect waters.

MYRTOS BEACH - blue colors like you've never seen before. It is one of the island's postcard. The view when you are getting there is simply unforgettable.

VIEW ARRIVING AT MYRTOS

The beach does not have much infrastructure... better this way, right ?? 😀  😎

ASOS -  a beautiful bay, with crystal and blue-green waters. It is a small village that seems to have come out of a movie scene.

ASOS VILLAGE - KEFALONIA

The bay is surrounded by some small mountains. If u are in good physical shape, u can hike and take the trail that leads to the castle on top of the main mountain.

ASOS is a perfect place to relax and have a wonderful meal.

RESTAURANTS IN ASO

It can be a good place to stay, although it is a little bit far from the other touristic attractions.

COASTAL ROUTE FROM ASOS TO FISKARDO - the road goes through hidden amazing beaches surrounded by beautiful forests. The scenery is FANTASTIC.

THERE WAS A LOVELY BEACH ALONG THE WAY
AND THERE WAS ANOTHER...
FISKARDO - it is a fisherman village that offers a beautiful marina with expensive yachts, typical Greek restaurants and several souvenir shops.

FISKARDO VILLAGE

TIME SEEMS TO STOP AT THE VILLAGE

EMBLISI BEACH - small, charming, very cozy beach. A kind of spiritual retreat with crystal waters. There is a famous 5 star hotel nearby.

BEACH OR POOL?

AGGIA EFFIMIA BEACH - a beautiful beach on the way to the eastern part of the island. It is an urban beach, but no less beautiful and enjoyable.

PETANI BEACH -  nice beach, similar to Myrtos, but less famous.
Route to Petani: https://goo.gl/maps/9SnKYQwK7QR2

Other beach options: Platis Gialos and Markris Gialos in Argostoli and Skala Beach.

That's it folks. From Kefalonie, we went to Athens ( link Athens) once again for a stopby before coming back to our Rio de Janeiro.

Below, u can enjoy some more photos. I hope they can motivate u (like u need it 🙈? ?!!!) to visit Kefalonia.
